Carolina Charm | Charleston

by Lauren

To kick off the summer, Sugar and I both said our goodbyes to the big city life in our beloved Chicago, and headed back down to our sweet, yet still spicy, southern homes. I ventured even further south to my family’s vacation town house in the slow, steady paced life of Charleston, South Carolina, where you can sit on the porch sipping your coffee and not have to worry about it getting cold. In fact, it may even get hotter (haha). Here, I tasted some delicious southern dishes and drinks, as well as a taste of the beautiful southern beaches, architecture and artwork.

Charleston, though southern, is not a city without fantastic style. While it's very hot during the summer, there is a nice breeze that comes off the water making it perfectly appropriate to wear long pants and maxi skirts, or dresses. The harem pants, flowing crop and Cole Haan sandals were a winning combo for strolling the gorgeous historic streets of Charleston.

This southern city is well known across the globe for its fantastic food scene. Southern flavors with expert top chefs make this place a top destination for even those outside of the country. Being a foodie, of course I try to make it to at least one or two restaurants every time I visit. One of my all time favorites (as well as the favorite of many food critics and magazines) is Husk. Set inside an old southern town house with big white porches, this spot is everything you want in a restaurant, and more. With rustic yet gourmet dishes, local flavors and delicious spice, you’ll be wanting the secret ingredients to every plate. I would attempt make recommendations but let’s be honest, everything you order here will be more than satisfactory. The bar, located right next to the restaurant, is also a big hotspot around town, so be sure to dine and hop on over for a few cocktails!

Charleston is not known to be a very dry city, and just so happens to be a college town. Do not let that make you hesitate to hit the bars if that’s not your scene! There are quite a few fabulous cocktail and whiskey bars around the area. Classy and particular about the style and craft of their beverages, Gin Joint and Rarebit are two places you’ll want to see (and be seen!) in Charleston. Rarebit has some of the best Moscow Mules ever tasted and Gin Joint…let’s just say you’re not likely to be disappointed.

Shopping on King Street is also a must here. Walking up and down looking at all the beautiful shops is a very enjoyable way to pass time. Also, if you're up for a morning run or nice walk, the battery is an old historic landmark from the war and a gorgeous view of the water. During the summer, Charleston holds an amazing southern art festival called Spoleto. With local and out of state artists, the variety of pieces is spectacular and will keep you browsing (and sipping!) for hours. One of my favorite artists this time was Kathy Crowther. Her intricate and colorful work was absolutely mesmerizing.

In this delightful city, the food scene, the people, the drinks, the architecture and art, and the culture in general are far different from the fast paced life of Chicago. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a nice, yet still very exciting, vacation. Though for now I’m definitely a big city girl, Charleston is a location that holds a special place in my heart, and one of the few places I rush to claim in the south (no offense;)).

Lauren's Tribal Jumpsuit | Hilton Head Island

by Lauren

So, before we get started with all the fashion, food, and good times, we need to clear the air a little bit.  You may have noticed that we were pretty silent this Spring. As fast approaching college graduates and members of the "real world", our list of to-dos seemed never ending. So, sadly, we took a hiatus from the blog world to put school first as we finished up our senior year at Wheaton College. Thankfully our hard work paid off, and we can now say that we are officially college graduates! This means two things: we are expected to do this whole "job" thing full time,  and more importantly, we have a bit more time on our hands to devote to the things we love (all of you, of course!). Thanks for sticking with us, now let's get back to the regularly scheduled programming. This means more fashion, more food, and more Chi-city lovin' in the posts to come!

Since summertime in our minds equates adventure, we are taking you "On the Road" with us as we share some of our travels with you!  In typical S&S fashion, this will include plenty of "nom"-worthy food photos, beautiful places, and also some summer trends that we have been loving lately. Hope you enjoy! And as always, if there is something you'd like us to write about, please let us know!

Lauren's Tribal Jumpsuit | Hilton Head Island

Last week, I embarked on a much needed getaway to my family’s vacation home in Hilton Head Island, just my mom and me. It was a perfect week of wine, girl talk, good food, and time spent soaking up the sun. It was made even sweeter by the last minute visit of a wonderful college friend, who drove down from Tennessee to spend a couple days with us. We had such a great time biking in the mornings, lounging at the beach, and just enjoying the simplicity that is island life.  When packing for the beach, I usually tend to throw shorts, tanks and swimsuits in a bag and call it a day. However, this time I had a couple special pieces that had been hiding in the back of my closet for way too long (I'm lookin' at you, Chiberia) and thought this was the perfect occasion to bring them out.  One of these special items just so happens to be the shining star of today's post. My mom found this funky, tribal print jumpsuit, by Peach Love California, at a boutique in our hometown. While I usually shy away from crazy prints, I absolutely love the way this jumpsuit looks and the easy breezy way it moves. This jumpsuit, paired with my trusty J.Crew bubble necklace, was the perfect ensemble for an evening spent dining "lowcountry style" with a moonshine cocktail in hand! What are some of your must-haves when beach bound? Let me know in the comments!

Next up, I'll be sharing some other looks from my beach trip, as well as my summer beauty favorites!

#NYFW & Your Closet

by Lauren

Oh the weather outside is frightful (at least here in Chicago), but the fashion is SO delightful. In fact, it is the perfect weather to curl up on the couch, tune in to and watch playbacks of all the best moments of one of fashion's biggest weeks of the year. Yes, we are talking about New York Fashion Week.  We know we weren't the only ones gawking at the gorgeousness surrounding this event. Blogger babes and style icons like Susie Bubble,  Chiara Ferragni, Eva Chen, and Leandra Medine (aka Man Repeller) were far too kind to give us front row seats as well via their social media accounts! So, here is our roundup of some of our favorite shows from this year's NYFW, and  a few ways that you can begin to incorporate some of these trends into your wardrobe, using items you probably already own!

Tory Burch

Often referred to as "preppy-bohemian luxe", this Tory Burch collection was filled with metallics, patterns, and thigh high stockings and we loved every single look. We think the collection, while very ornate, can easily be translated to real life in a few easy ways.

First, let's talk about those thigh-highs. They have the awesome ability to function doubly as protection from the cold, while also creating subtle sexiness for those cold winter months. We love the idea of a tweed or leather mini, some thigh high stockings and a cozy oversized sweater. What could be better?

Style Tip:

The best way to achieve this delicately balanced mix of bohemian and prep is with a little pattern play. Pairing your tried and true separates in new ways will help you to look like you are fresh off the runway. Take a simple bubble skirt, add a sheer patterned blouse, and layer with a sweater  in a similar color. To complete the look, accessorize with some metallic sunnies or statement bag( and don't forget those socks!) Mixing contrasting patterns may scare you a bit at first, but we find it's much easier when they are kept within the same color family.

A little sassy and a little sweet, what's not to love about this DKNY collection? We totally admire how they took classic pieces, such as that hounds-tooth jacket, and turned them into more modern, trendy (oversized) masterpieces. Talk about inspiration. Oh, and did we mention the hats? In short, this line's got swag.

Style Tip:

Though this collection may intimidate you with the harsh oversized pieces and deep bold colors, you can easily dominate any of these looks, AND on a budget! All of these outfits are simple pieces that you most likely have in your closet, and just forgot about. All you need is a black turtleneck, pencil skirt, oversized jacket (and/or vest), and that black baseball cap, or snapback, you thought was for an off hair-day. So get in there, search those hangers and find your DKNY-alike fabulosity!

Ralph Lauren

This collection is very much the classic RL we know and love, while also being extremely luxurious and elegant. The subtle, yet statement-making color palette of creams, grays, and pastels is gorgeous, feminine, and one of Sugar's personal favorites from NYFW. In addition, the fresh-faced makeup looks and sleek updos further emphasize the sophistication of these pieces. How can you not feel capable of conquering the world, in the most ladylike fashion, while donning this monochromatic ensemble (beret included)?

Style Tip:

Adding a little Ralph Lauren luxe to your look couldn't be easier. While you most likely don't have oodles of silks, cashmeres, and exotic furs lying around to pile on your body, never fear! You can easily achieve these ohh la la ladylike looks by channelling the monochromatic color palette seen throughout the collection. Pair winter white jeans with a cream turtleneck, oversized mens' blazer and a statement hat and you will be looking just as stunning as Miss Karlie Kloss herself.

Michael Kors

Oh MK, how you never fail to please us. This designer brought us a collection that was one of a kind this year, and boy did it stand out! Wilderness chic is how we would label these fall looks. Complete with thick sweaters, bleak colors, and fabulous fur, this line brought the outfits to weather any Chicago winter while still looking fashionable!

Style Tip:

Now, we realize that you probably don't have mink scarves or jackets made out of...whatever kind of animal that may be. It's true, most of us don't. That, however, shouldn't stop you from being able to layer up like this and still look as classy as ever. If you don't already have a faux-fur vest or scarf, our advice is to invest in one. It will be worth your while (and wear), and they aren't terribly expensive if you shop in the right place. Option one- Pair that special fur piece with a turtle neck, longer skirt, belt and tall boots. Option two- Pair it with a high necked shift dress and chunky heels or booties. These styles may not be everyone's cup of tea, but in our opinion, they will definitely send you into the wild, in the chicest of ways.

Annnd now for the grand "fry-nale".....

Just for good measure, (and also because our inner french fry fiend’s dreams have come true) here is the one, the only McDonald's fry ensemble by Moschino. A perfectly ironic and irreverent tribute to pop culture.

What did you think of NYFW? Let us know how you plan to incorporate these awesome looks into your wardrobe this year!

3 Cures for the Common Valentine's Day

by Lauren

Are we the only ones who feel like Valentine's Day is just like the common cold? It comes every year, makes you feel icky (especially if you eat too much comfort candy), and it leaves you feeling all alone. Well, this year that's going to change and we're not going to let the guys dictate how our night plays out! Come on ladies, we are totally capable of fighting those V-Day induced blues and the all too common (not to mention fattening) sugar coma. What do these love doctors suggest, you ask? Below you will find our solutions to Cupid's pesky V-Day probs...

Symptom: Bloating or otherwise just feeling fat due to eating your emotions

Doctors' Orders: Instead of caving into your sweet tooth (and your emotions) with mountains of cheap mysteriously filled chocolate candies and boxes of Franzia, we suggest you gather up your gal pals and head to the Cheeky + Equinox Riding Solo Event this Thursday at 6:30 pm. After crushing those classes, head home to whip up a healthy meal and don't be afraid to indulge in a few extra calories in the form of vino (you've earned it!).

Symptom: Envy due to excessive flower and jewelry postings on Instagram by friends, co-workers, etc.

Doctors' Orders: Let's face it ladies, if he hasn't asked you yet, he's probably not going to, and that means you're not getting that Hermes bag you've been eyeing (or even a cheesy teddy bear). Well, all the more reason to put that credit card to good use by purchasing gifts for the most important person in your life right now: YOU! Check out Chriselle Lim's "Chic List" for some gift inspiration that will leave you feeling pretty in pink. As for us, we have our sights set on some hot new pumps (like these Blonde Salad x Steve Madden stunners)!

Symptom: Puffy eyes and an empty box of Puffs

Doctors' Orders: Save the sappy movie on the couch for another time, and this year plan for a night out on the town! There are tons of pre and V-Day events going on throughout the city and trust us, there are still plenty of eligible bachelors that are just waiting to run into you in your new Jimmy Choo's. Here are a couple of options to point you in the right direction (and possibly even towards your perfect match!):

Now that you have been cured of the sickness of love, get ready for your best Valentine's Day yet! Whether you're with your man, your girls or just your pretty self, we think there's always something to celebrate! If you see us out and about, be sure to holla at ya girls!
