June Favorites

by Lauren

I decided to take a page from all the beauty guru YouTubers out there and make a June favorites list, in blog form. With so many things to love about summer, I wanted to share with you just a few of my current obsessions. Enjoy!

Beauty Product: Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream

I can’t say enough good things about this product. When BB creams first popped onto the scene I totally thought they were a gimmick but finally I decided to give one a try. Because I was so skeptical, I decided to go with a drugstore variety, and I am so glad I did. This product has becomes my must-have summer secret to flawless skin. I like to layer it and wear a light powder on top for everday wear, but on some days I can just wear it alone. It feels so light and makes my skin feel moutsurized and glowy. I just love it. If you are in the market for an affordable BB cream, i would really recommend this one.

Carriage House

This month I got back to my southern roots and decided to see if Chicago could hold their own when it comes to southern fare. I honestly cannot say a bad thing about this gem in Wicker Park, from the décor to the food and the service, it was all perfection.  With items like baby back ribs, shrimp and grits, lowcountry oyster roast, and crispy pork shoulder, you should come hungry because you will definitely want to order one of everything.  After I finished my meal, I just had to pay my compliments to the chef who unsurprisingly  is from South Carolina. Job well done, Carriage House. I’ll be back for your amazing fried green tomatoes in the very near future!  Here are some photos below along with descriptions of some of the highlights from my meal!

Skillet Cornbread with tomatoes. Fried Green Tomatoes with Pickled Shrimp English Peas, Horseradish Aioli and creamy Tarragon Vinaigrette. Quail with black pepper dumpling, vidalia soubise, and mire poix pickle relish. Fritters topped with powdered sugar( don't remember what the dipping sauce was but it was amazing!)

 The Bling Ring

I was looking forward to this movie for months and finally went to see it with some girlfriends from work. I love both Sofia Coppola and Emma Watson so I knew I would enjoy this film. Emma Watson is hilarious and newcomer Katie Chang( an Illinois native)  is amazing in her breakout role as ring leader, Rebecca. I definitely left the theater with an itch to go shopping....I mean, how could you not??

Simple Gourmet for Summer

This month I finally decided to bite the bullet and learn how to cook. This is definitely no easy feat and I still have a very, ( VERY) long way to go,but thanks to The Everygirl, I was able to get off to a good start. When I cook, I don’t want to cook something simple and boring, and I want to feel like I’m super gourmet even though I’m not. The solution to this is what I like to call “ simple gourmet” and I found the recipes I tried this month to be just that. These meals are easy, inexpensive, and perfectly light and fresh for summer. Here's a link to the recipes from The Everygirl, and below are two of my favorite creations: Chicken Lettuce Wraps with Peanut Sesame Noodles and Feta Meatballs with Tomato Orzo.

 Crop Tops

This month, (although I haven’t had much of a chance to wear them since I am in an office most of the time) I have been loving crop tops. I am so happy that these are trendy once again and think they can look super cute when worn properly. My favorite way to wear a crop top is with a high waisted circle skirt. My go-to brand for both crop tops and circles skirts is definitely Brandy Melville. Although most of their pieces are a one size fits all style, they have a lot of stretch and have always seemed to fit perfectly. There is nothing better than slipping on a cute patterned high- waisted skirt with a little crop top for a fun, summer day!

These are all my picks for June! Hope you enjoyed them! What were your favorites of the month?
